Councillor "Gone Golfin" McLean is bringing forward a notice of motion to city council thisĀ Tuesday, Oct 27th in an effort to stall all street safety projects that improve safety for bike users, even if they also make the street safer for other users. His highly political anti-safety stunt rolls out the welcome mat for more provincial government interference in local municipal issues and plays political games with the safety of children and all Calgarians who use our streets everyday.

It's never a good time to play political games when people's lives are at risk. But that is exactly what Councillor Mclean is doing. Road fatalities in Calgary are at a decade plus high ofĀ 39 deaths in 2025, that includes 15 pedestrian fatalities Ā and 2 cyclists. And the trend is worsening...

Unfortunately, the Provincial governmentās war on traffic safety has rendered the Calgary Police āhamstrung in their abilities to address the traffic safety concerns that exist in our municipalitiesā, according to former Calgary Police Chief Mark Neufeld.Ā
"By further restricting our automated enforcement efforts, I have no doubt there will be an increase in serious injury and fatal collisions in Calgary."
Ā
šļø We need City Council to take action to accelerate safer street design improvements to reverse the increasingly dangerous streets for all types of usersĀ
City Council must accelerate efforts to improve street safety for all users in Calgary. Councillor McLean's anti-safety notice of motion would stall efforts and waste public money.

Councillor "Gone Golfin" McLean's fiscal track record most closely resembles the smouldering Calgary landfill fire. In the previous council term, he most notably championed the $750 million public subsidy to the billionaire Flames owners to build them a new arena and forfeit all the operating revenues of the new city-owned facility. He also advocated to annex land from Foothills County for suburban developers. Recently, he has beenĀ advocating for over $377 million in fiscally irresponsible sprawl subsidies for excess new suburban infrastructure.Ā
