Ward 7 residents hoping for change may need to unite behind a single candidate in the October 20th municipal election

Residents hoping for change in Calgary’s Ward 7 neighbourhoods in the upcoming October 20th municipal election may find themselves disappointed if they don’t unite behind a strong candidate to replace Terry Wong. A new poll shows Terry Wong with the Communities First municipal political party leading in a crowded field and independent candidate Myke Atkinson following in second place. 17% of decided voters indicated support for Wong and 9% for Atkinson. With 54% of voters still undecided, Wong remains vulnerable to voters coalescing behind one candidate.

Of the unofficial and official candidates running for Ward 7 city councillor, the poll found independent candidate Myke Atkinson ahead of the crowded field of challengers and within the margin of error of incumbent Terry Wong, making him the most likely candidate to defeat Wong with just over 5 weeks to go before the election.

Calgary Party candidate is stalled in 4th place

Repeat Ward 7 candidate Heather McRae, who placed third in the 2021 election registered just 5% support (4th place) amongst respondents despite higher name recognition than Myke Atkinson from her previous election run. This mirrors the lacklustre performance of Calgary Party mayoral candidate Brian Thiessen who is polling 5th place for mayor at 3% according to an August mayoral poll conducted by Leger.

About the poll

The survey was conducted by EveryAnswer for Project Calgary between September 3th and 10th, 2025. The sample size of the survey is 367. No margin of error is reported because participants were recruited using a non-probability method. For comparison purposes, a probabilistic sample of the same size would be ±5.1% percent, 19 times out of 20.
