Poll: Strong Majority of Calgarians Support Building the Green Line Now
Ahead of key vote, Calgarians endorse building the Green Line North and South to create jobs and improve transit service
CALGARY, AB | Monday, June 15, 2020: Project Calgary and Calgarians for Transit commissioned* a telephone poll of 1,617 Calgarians, which was conducted on June 11, 2020. The poll confirmed the majority of Calgarians support building the Green Line north and south based on jobs and committed funding. Here are the results:
- 67.8% of Calgarians support building the Green Line based on the estimate that the project will create 20,000 new jobs.
- 70.5% of Calgarians support building the Green Line while the project is supported by a $3 Billion dollar commitment from the Federal and Provincial governments.
- 63.5% of Calgarians support building the Green Line to North Central and Southeast communities, as planned by the City.

“The poll demonstrates that a strong majority of Calgarians want the Green Line built now, from north to south. Calgarians overwhelmingly reject half-baked ideas to cut the north portion of the Green Line and only build south. Not only is it necessary to get LRT to 16th Avenue North now, it is critical to lay the foundation for lower cost future expansions to North Central communities whose BRT buses are already over capacity. Calgarians don’t want Council to delay much-needed jobs and investment in our economy. Now is the time to build the Green Line.”

Both this poll and a previous May 19 poll by Green Line opponents show +67% support for the Green Line.

The City of Calgary estimates construction of the Green Line LRT project will create 20,000 new jobs. Do you support the building of the Green Line?
2) 70.5% Support the Green Line Based on Committed Funding
Stage 1 of the Green Line LRT project is fully funded and supported by a $3 Billion dollar commitment from the Federal and Provincial governments. Do you support the building of the Green Line now, while this funding is available?
3) 63.5% Support Building the Green Line North and South
Opponents of the Green Line have proposed cancelling the LRT expansion to North Central communities that have very high ridership and building only to southeast communities with much lower ridership, for the same cost. Do you support building the Green Line LRT to North Central and Southeast communities, as planned?
*This survey was created and fielded by Project Calgary using IVR technology from Converso. The survey was sent to 25,053 Calgarians and 1,617 individuals completed it. Phone numbers were a random mix of cell and landlines. The survey was conducted in the evening on June 11, 2020. The poll has a 3.0% margin of error (95% confidence).
